Q: Why would I choose ES over DecoStudio?
A: In one word, CONTROL.
As I began to write this note it dawned on me how strange it feels to describe what DecoStudio “won’t” do. I don’t believe that is something anyone has attempted to do as of yet. People are so wrapped up in showing off all the things
DecoStudio
“can” do. DecoStudio was not created/designed/or marketed to compete with ES. It’s intended to fill a void below the ES level.
We all wish for an easy to use system it is natural for ES users to drool over some of DecoStudio’s simplicity. What an ES user must do though is focus on what they would have to give up in switching to such a straight forward simplistic system.
I like to compare Deco to the little yellow box camera because the yellow boxes provide darn good picture to the novice. You point and click. How much more simple can it get? If you cared to use a zoom lens or add a special UV filter you are out of luck when it comes to the yellow box. The yellow box cannot adjust for lighting using the shutter speed for shots of the moon or other special affects. Still the yellow box is great for many typical camera needs. If they were the end all, so many of us would not own cameras. They are great, they serve a simple need but they are lacking in features.
A step up from the yellow box may be a simple digital camera. Inexpensive digital cameras have a lot of features, some automatic (such as focus) but again if you are wishing high quality images, truly powerful zoom capability or the use of filters or professional flash technology the digital camera will not do the trick.
There are high end cameras with fully automatic features and capable full manual functionality which allow the users to control all aspects of the process. Shutter speed, F-Stop, hundreds of light filters, sophisticated flash technology, and a large range of specialty lenses. A photography nut or professional could spend thousands of dollars on the equipment and feel exhausted at what it would take to learn how to use it all. The reason a professional would spend the money and time is because that is what is required to take the quality of pictures we expect when we pay a professional. It’s the photo quality we expected when we read a magazine or view a professional shot image.
I have tried myself to take pictures and place them on my web site and they don’t look the same as a professional’s work. For instance go to the machine area of our site and look at the difference in the new machine images provided to me compared to the used machines I took myself. The pictures I took look ok, but they clearly are not as nice as those taken by a professional.
The difference is the camera used and the photographer's skill to use his equipment. I will suggest that DecoStudio is the yellow box, ES21D is the simple digital camera and ES45 or 65 are the professional grade cameras.
Underlay
Deco will allow you to turn auto underlay on or off. If it is turned on, it will determine the type of underlay based on the objects stitch type, width and fabric you indicated the design would be sewn on. You must live with what it decides. If after you sew the design out you feel it needs additional underlay such as double zig zag, you can not add that. Underlay On or Off, those are your options.  In ES you can determine if you would like one or two levels of underlay. You select the type, the underlay’s density, the stitch length and margins from the objects edge. In ES you have CONTROL to tweak the properties of the object.  Columns
Yes in Deco you have Fusion fill (I like to think of this as Complex Satin) whereas in ES45 you do not have Fusion. However in ES 21D and above you have Input A. Because ES has given us Input A and made Fusion a higher end feature I understand why “it appears” Deco is getting more than 21 and 45. Personally if I had to choose only one of the two I had I would select Input A and here is why. To make a simple column with Input A you define the points for the shape and press enter. Let’s say there are four points. The column required five entries.
To make the same object in Fusion fill you would
- Make the same four points, press enter to tell the program you are done defining the shape
- Press another enter to tell it there is not a hole
- Press Enter again to accept default Start/End location or click where to start the object and click where to end the object
- Press another Enter to accept the default stitch angles or two clicks to define the stitch angle (this number goes WAY up if the column has any shape to it)
for a total of seven entries minimum. This makes it more cumbersome to digitize your own text or a number of columns.
C Input
Deco allows the user to define the width of the column and that is it. ES features such as offset, rounded corners, corner fraction are not available. I personally feel C Input looses its power without the ability to offset the column.  Run Stitch
Deco allows you to adjust the stitch length. ES allows the use of Cord Gap which is a power feature. Input Methods
Deco only gives you six input methods, three of which are for creating objects. The other three are Applique, Text and Monograming.
Stitch Types
Deco provide basic stitch types but is missing Contour and Program split. The only stitch effects DecoStudio provides are Underlay and Pull Compensation. ES provides Smart Corners, Jagged edge, Trapunto, Liquid effect, Florentine, Flexi Split, 3D Warp, User definded Split and the list goes on. 
Complex Fill
Again you use Fusion Fill. There isn’t a Complex Fill tool as you know it today in ES. Text
There are four baselines and 30 fonts compared to ES’s ten baselines and 130 fonts. ES has User refined alphabets and even though Deco has the Fixed width baseline, you do not have the five width options that ES offers with the Fixed width baseline. DecoStudio allows you to determine stitch direction in text such as left to right, right to left and center out. It does not not allow the control of top to bottom or bottom to top or to reverse the direction from one line to the next.  Auto Start and End
Deco allow you to turn Auto Start and End on or off and selection of nine positions. It does not allow the user to turn on or off the Maintain automatically that ES users are accustomed to or the ability to digitize you own position outside the nine preselected points. Which is best for you? The list of what ES has and Deco doesn’t goes on and on. It’s similar to explaining what ES45 has compared to ES21D. DecoStudio was not created to compete with ES or even replace it. It was developed as an entry level system with almost complete automated use. Some of the noteworthy features will naturally be included in coming releases of ES and that we will have to wait for. Which platform is best for you is a personal choice. If the user does not want control but simplicity, then DecoStudio is the correct choice. If you desire the ability to tweak beyond the reshaping of the object then ES is better suited for your needs. This doesn’t mean a ES user would not benefit from a Deco system. It makes sense that a professional photographer will sometimes pull out a simple digital camera or purchase a yellow box camera every now and then for its simplicity. That’s not an either or decision, it’s an “every now and then” choice. I have been selling Deco to ES users who feel
- Deco will fill a hole in their needs.
- Sometimes they just want to crank out a logo with less time invested knowing it will be of lesser quality.
- They want a second system to set up simple text designs or transfer designs to a machine.
- They would like the ability to create fairly accurate stitch estimates.
- It makes speculation work less costly.
- They feel DecoStudio will meet their typical quality standards and will use their existing ES system to edit or supplement DecoStudios.
There are many reasons why an ES user may wish to purchase DecoStudio. The leading scenario I have seen to switch to Deco and sell their ES has been those who feel ES has too much power for their needs and/or have found the learning curve too steep and they wish for a simple system. For those who feel the learning curve is too steep I will suggest that the learning curve is steep if you are teaching yourself. If the user were to take our on line training they would gain the confidence needed to make their ES investment pay off. I also do not want to sound like sour grapes. I am not a DecoStudio basher and an ES promoter. I love both products for what they are intended for and believe as a salesperson I must qualify the customer to understand what their needs and desires are. I do not want to sell a customer ES when Deco was a better fit and vice versa. Many current users of other automated systems are opting for ES, because their time with an automated system has created a desire to tweak the design’s settings. The only way to determine which platform is best for you is to receive a demonstration of both and then discuss your needs and options with a qualified salesperson that is able to provide trusted guidance. The best choice you can make is one that is customized to your needs and desires.
